Nepo did it again, this time against Gelfand.



The typical heuristics — develop your pieces, don't move the same piece twice, castle, don't push the pawns in front of your king — are again out the window. Link to the full game.

Too bad it's obscured by all the hoopla about Magnus' jeans.

особо ничего он этим не добился, движок оценивает позицию 0.4 в пользу черных

Непо нарушил кучу базовых дебютных правил (фигуры не развил, не рокировался, пешки перед своим королём двигал), а оценка позиции по-прежнему равная.

Партию он кстати выиграл, доведя атаку до логического завершения. В частности потому, что загнал противника в малознакомую ему ситуацию.

С развитием шахматных программ стало понятно, что не бывает хороших ходов.

Ход или нормальный (после которого оценка позиции не меняется), или плохой (после которого оценка позиции ухудшается).

Well, to be honest, it started as a pretty regular Nimzo. I can kind of (which means, not really) explain f3-e4 - one of Nimzo's ideas for Black is to maintain control of e4 (as Nc3 got traded away), and this is probably the most blunt way to shut this down.
But the Ra2-Rf2 maneuver and the subsequent pawn storm on the kingside is crazy. I mean, sure it's been prep, but it's unnatural to play like that. Well, the man did play for the world crown twice, even if he lost both times.

That must be the difference. When I try to play like that, I get beaten.

So do I. When I started playing as boring and principled as possible... I started getting beaten slightly less often :). Although I still have fewer chances against an average club player than Nepo himself against Carlsen.
